“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” ~ Dr. Seuss
My name is Mary Miller, and I am a coach. I bring to my clients broad and varied life experiences and a reputation for being unfailingly honest. I pair my personal integrity with a calm, fearless sharing of opinions and knowledge as needed . . . even when my perspective is unconventional or diverges from prevailing paradigms. Although the phrase is a bit worn, I “walk my talk” in my life and in my coaching work. And, I ask my clients to do the same.
I am an attorney by training, with other jobs and careers along the way to launching my coaching practice. My industry experience includes retailers, wholesalers, media, engineering firms, services, and non-profit organizations. I have business cycle experience with start-ups, growing multi-state/multi-site operations, and mature multi-generation, family companies. I worked for a number of years in human resources, both in-house and as a consultant. I have been affiliated with the University of Virginia as an adjunct professor. I have presented at conferences and events. I love writing and have been published in several places (Charlottesville Business Journal, Virginia Gardener, and a co-authored white paper for the Society for Human Resource Management entitled “Ethics & Generational Differences: Interplay Between Values and Ethical Business Decisions.”)
In no particular order, here are some other things you might want to know about me. A coaching relationship only works well when the coach and the client have a good connection, and I hope this gives you a sense of me personally.
I love animals and plants. Dogs and cats gravitate to me, even the shy ones. I have a Master Gardener certificate and I enjoy creating landscape designs for my friends.
I enjoy the freedom that comes from saying, “I don’t know.” One of the greatest things about coaching is that only you have the answers that are right for you, and I get to help you discover those answers.
I’ve lived in several states on both coasts of the US, including Maryland, California, and Oregon (and – despite what people think – L.A. is not the most laid-back place in this country). I need to be near large bodies of water to feel whole. I currently have two dogs, two cats, and one former husband.
I am passionate about sustainable agriculture, green buildings, and organic foods. I’m a gourmet cook. My favorite books tend to be non-fiction, although lately I’ve been reading lots of fiction. And, it makes me crazy when I see a person driving a high-performance car slowly in the left lane!
